Holyhead Ryder Cup

2023

Once again a cracking weekend for the next instalment of the Holyhead Ryder Cup and the drama matched last years' amazing finale. More about that later.

Holyhead ever present, Phil Raw, failed a late fitness test and was gutted to miss out. After some scrambling around a replacement was found ensuring we had a complement of 8 fourballs for each day.

Saturday was warm and windy providing excellent conditions for this beautiful coastal course which was in tip-top condition ready to see 8 high quality matches full of skill and thrilling matches. But that had to wait for another day.

Instead, it was up to us to do the course justice. Saturday turned out to be the Seniors best day ever. After 4 long years could the tide be turning?

Seniors' captain, Andy Hickson, sent out his troops confident of at least coming home with a lead by the end of the day.

The warm and sunny weather took a strange turn as, late on in the round, a mist rolled in from the sea (Paul McArtney™️) and enveloped us all in a gloomy cloud. It disappeared as soon as it arrived leaving us all covered in a wet sheen.

The first 4 matches went the way of the Seniors and out on the course it was hard to find a match with the Juniors up. Group after group came in with news of Seniors winning and the final score at the end of the days' play was 6-2 to the blue team.

There was time for most players to retreat to the hotel for a quick shower and a return back to the clubhouse for a few beers and a great curry. As last year a few more beers followed that with what is becoming a traditional quiz in the bar from Mr Hickson. There was quite a late night for some and a few sore heads the next morning as the Juniors contemplated the days' play facing an uphill challenge.

Most of the group assembled in time for much needed coffee, a hearty breakfast and the announcement of the day's teams. Juniors' Captain, Nick Griffiths had front loaded the pairings with his strongest teams and they were in ebullient mood as we headed for the tee.

The day started off in sombre mood as news of a club member being hit by a golf ball on the back of the head with an ambulance visible down to the 18th tee. A short while later, an air ambulance arrived to take him away under a induced coma and our thoughts were all with the player and the club. At the time of writing, we are hoping for a positive outcome.

The weather was totally different from the day before with a strong breeze facing the shots out west and a longish spell of rain mid-round that caused a few problems. However, now that we play in the summer, the rain is much easier to cope with and at no point was it ever cold.

Within an hour or so, news rattled through all the groups of an Eagle from Felix on the 5th hole....the first ever Holyhead Ryder Cup Eagle. Prior to that he was feeling slightly dodgy from the night before, but the adrenaline surge from that boosted his pairing with Captain Nick who were playing the Seniors strongest pairing in John Hunter and Mike Taylor and they went on to win the match 3 & 2. That added to the first match going the way of the Juniors and the 3rd match being all square, the red team were mounting an unlikely comeback.

Andy Hickson played a Captain's innings bringing home the 4th match with a point. The match was poised at 7.5 - 4.5 in the Senior's favour with 4 matches to come. The Seniors needed to get to 8.5 to win the Ryder Cup trophy for the first time in 4 years.

Next up the 5th match came in all square with Andy Haigh missing a putt on the last to take the match but only sharing the points and the 7th match walked in early as rookie Josh Wilkie and Aidan Quirke obliterated their opponents 6 & 5 in the biggest win of the weekend and the tie was poised at 8 to 6.

At this stage it was getting extremely tense for both teams. The final group came in early with Paul Godfrey and Robert Briggs who were (according to Godders, the sacrificial lambs) produced a remarkable victory over the really strong pair of Pete Hough and Shaun Davies to leave it all the the last group with the scores at 8-7 to the Seniors.

And so it came to the situation that Andy Hickson had try to avoid with Simon Rushton being in the last group. News from the course was they were all square coming down the last and by a sheer chance of fate, that final 2 foot putt fell to Simon to make it to halve the match and win the Ryder Cup for the Seniors.

It was a proper Stuart Pearce moment for him, with every other player looking on (no pressure then) the ball clattered against the stick and the match was halved leaving the total score to 8.5 - 7.5 to the Seniors!!

The Ryder Cup was back with the Seniors.

That leaves the series closer with the Juniors winning 6 Ryder Cups to the Senior's 5. All setting up nicely for next year.
